Beginning today, ANNABEL (Kent, OH) is hitting the road for a little southern lovin’ in support of its well-received debut EP Now That We’re Alive.

Playing an infectious brand of indie pop laced with feverish melodies, Annabel balances it all with post-punk dynamics that convey a heightened sense of urgency. The trio takes the best from several different genres, forging their own unique path as Now That We’re Alive shines a bright light on the band’s future.

For those that do not have their fingers on the pulse of Lakeland, Florida, Mouse Fire have changed things up a bit.  Frontman Joey Bruce (vocals, guitar) made the decision to part ways with the rest of the band a couple of months ago.  His talent and showmanship will be missed.

But fear not… Mouse Fire are forging onward as a trio. The band has recorded some new material, and it sounds like they’re forging a more expansive sound for themselves in the process.  No word as to when we can expect a release, but from the sound of things, it will be promising.

I’m looking forward to seeing how playing as a trio translates into their live set, as well as seeing Shane (vocals, guitars) in the spotlight.

New LaSalle Album!

New LaSalle record is out and once again, I did not have a clue. I seem to be slipping in my old age. The band is Mike Reed (Small Brown Bike, Able Baker Fox), Katy Reed (Charlevoix) and Dan Jaquint (Small Brown Bike). Pretty World was released last month on Gangplank Records. It is the follow up to the band’s debut, 2005’s Expedition Songs. I reviewed that particular record during the first month of SAL’s existence. My how time flies.

New Smoking Popes Album!

Just as I questioned whether this album would ever come out, the new Smoking Popes album, Stay Down, is now up on Itunes. Listening now and the band sounds as smooth as ever…it’s like they never left us. This is the Popes’ first album since 1997’s Destination Failure.

You can listen to “If You Don’t Care” and “Grab Your Heart And Run” off the new album on the band’s myspace page linked above. The band now includes drummer Neil Hennessy of The Lawrence Arms.

What a fabulous press quote! Hard to believe I reviewed Moving Mountains‘ Pneuma almost a year ago now. It’s nice to see Deep Elm embracing their roots with the release of this amazing debut album.
