Building The State…

BEST NEW MUSIC

Building The State “Faces In The Architecture” (Amnot)

BUY HERE!

Remembering some vague positive thoughts towards Building The State’s debut full-length, I bought Faces In The Architecture on a bit of a whim. It has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made this year. The band has made a giant leap forward in their songwriting with this immaculately constructed four song EP. Much like Moving Mountains, who I reviewed earlier this year, Building The State are setting up camp somewhere between emo and post rock. At times on Faces In The Architecture I am reminded of the earlier Velvet Teen material. But, once again like Moving Mountains, the band Building The State so closely resembles are the great Appleseed Cast.

Three songs on Faces In The Architecture showcase the band employing vocals more liberally than on their first album. The third song returns the band to the pure instrumental rock that bares a striking resemblance to Explosions In The Sky. What Building The State does so well, regardless of whether or not vocals appear, is at creating a uniform mood. These four songs flow so remarkably well together over the span of this 19 minute EP. When the vocals do appear they never overtake the music. The vocals only compliment the musical landscape the band creates. The four songs here add up to more than the sum of their parts. That is never an easy accomplishment for an album, much less an EP. Building The State not only make it happen, they perfect it. The band is about to head into the studio to record their second full-length record. Hopefully, Faces In The Architecture is only a small indication of the greatness that lies ahead.

Zillionaire are my favorite of the local Tampa acts. I’ve seen them play about a dozen times or so now, and they’re defninitely improving as a band. Their live sound is preferable, in my opinion, and it makes the album sound waaaaay over-produced. But it’s good none the less.

They’ve got a good late 90’s indie sound going on that you should enjoy, given your apparent tastes.

Check out some of the other stuff on New Granada. Not bat at all.
