Possible Selves “Possible Selves” (Sao Bento Music)

Possible Selves are an impressive indie band from Atlanta, GA. They are led by mult-instrumentalist Neil Williams. The list of instruments that Williams plays here is impressive. However, it is Williams unique songwriting and compositions that make Possible Selves such a hidden treasure. The band plays dark and moody music in the vein of bands like Smog and Sparklehorse and they do it very well. As weird as some of these songs seem to get they are never for the sake of just being difficult. There is a method to the madness. Possible Selves does a fantastic job of creating moods. There is a sense of desperation and loneliness that run throughout the album. The band’s songs are rich and instrumentally diverse and they compliment Willliams’ vocals with immaculate results. The list of memorable songs here is long. Possible Selves debut self-titled album is a slow burner of an album. It might take a few listens to sink in but once it does you will be hooked. At close to 55 minutes Possible Selves debut is a bit long-winded but that is only a small complaint. Neil Williams and Possible Selves are names to watch for. I can’t say I would be surprised to see either of those names turn up on the Matador, Merge or Touch & Go rosters some day soon.
