Tim Barry "Laurel Street Demo" (Self-Released)

So, Tim Barry, the lead singer for the Richmond, VA based band Avail, has gone solo. Truthfully, I got this demo in the mail a few months ago but hadn't given it more than a few listens. Then, the news that Tim Barry had signed to Suburban Home to release a full-length later this year made me go back to give it a listen. If you know anything about Avail then I think you will have a good idea of where Tim Barry is coming from. Avail has always been one of my favorite bands. Avail is like this wonderful combination of melodic punk/hardcore mixed with the passion of southern rock. It sounds peculiar I know, but anyone who has seen the band live can attest to their amazing spirit.
Tim Barry's solo demo is primarily acoustic-based but retains the signature sound of the anthemic Avail. Similar themes of the South, working class hardships, drinking and heartbreak resonate throughout the demo. It's quite an impressive debut for Mr. Barry but one that is not surprising considering the fine work he has accomplished in Avail. As Avail's future may be up in the air, it is comforting to know that Tim Barry will continue on. I am quite sure that his voice and sincere love for music will keep the diehard Avail fans like myself completely fulfilled.
