Arctic Monkeys…

Arctic Monkeys "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" (Domino)

Wow, some bands seem to hit at the exact right time to sell a gob of records. Arctic Monkeys seem to be one of those lucky bands. Cashing in on the dance rock craze (which I had hoped was dead by now), Arctic Monkeys are a competant group but just do not offer anything new to the genre at all. The songs are catchy but there is no substance behind them. This album is simply forgettable once it leaves your stereo. Where as Bloc Party hit on something unique and interesting within the genre, Arctic Monkeys seem quite content with rehashing what's been done to death already. Morissey was right about Arctic Monkeys when he said that the much-hyped British outfit had found success too quickly and without paying its dues. I would like to add that the band did so without too much talent either. Kudos to Arctic Monkeys for that I guess.

RIYL: (second rate version of…) The Libertines, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand

I can’t actually believe what I just read.

You think Bloc Party’s contribution to music is better than ANYONE’s - especially the Arctic Monkeys???!!!?? Laughable.

There’s a reason the AMs have sold so many albums - and it really ISN’T hype.

I think it is hype. I heard a shitty quality mp3 of Banquet almost 18 months before I was standing amongst screaming 15 year-old girls at Irving Plaza.

Now, a year after the proper release of Bloc Party’s record, I still find it to be quite interesting… Unfortunately, I can’t saay the same for the Arctic Monkeys.
